Product Information
vRanger provides image-level hot backups of either the entire virtual machine or just the differential simply and easily, while the virtual machine is still running. Unlike agents, vRanger runs outside the guest OS, and can be integrated with VMware technologies.
vRanger is now split in to two editions, vRanger Backup and Replication (also known as vRanger Pro) includes vReplication for improved disaster recovery capabilities.
New Features
New features in vRanger 5
- vRanger Backup and Replication now includes vReplicator's replication capabilities
- vRanger Backup and Replication now includes all available replication modes including differential, hybrid and Change Block Tracking. Integrates job management, the main engine, scheduling, logging and savepoint management. Fully supports the vStorage API.
- Improved licensing with one licence key for both vRanger Pro and vReplicator capabilities
- Patent-pending full catalog capabilities - features GUI-based search/browse, numerous search options and a self-cleaning catalog mechanism
- NFS/FTP support including NAS application support as a destination for backup and FTP support as a destination for backup
- Linux file level restore (FLR) support
- Fibre restore - restore over Fibre-Channel (FC) networks with LAN-free deployments
Features
Backup and recovery
- One centralised installation provides ESX(i) backup across your entire vSphere environment
- Native cataloging efficiently indexes file metadata for easy search and one-step recovery
- Active Block Mapping reads only active blocks from the image, minimizing backup windows and storage needs
- Distributed processing ensures you avoid impact on host operations by sending VM data through a single, central server
- Backup jobs can automatically refresh to stay current with new VMs as they are added in the environment
Disaster recovery
- Quick, cost-effective recovery can be done on site or at remote sites
- Easy backup of ESX(i) systems to local repositories and replication ESX systems enables off-site recovery
- Flexibility to combine backup and replication jobs ensures you can meet SLAs for recovery time and point objectives
Physical protection
- Combination of vRanger and vConverter protects physical systems
- Back up or replication of the virtual images of your physical systems provide cost-effective, bare metal recovery
Application support
- Image-level backups are compatible also with object-level and application-specific recovery; for example, you can use Quest’s Recovery Manager for Exchange with your vRanger backups for agentless, recovery of email and other Exchange objects
- Native VSS implementation ensures that applications are properly backed up and ready to restore
Licensing
CPU Licensing
This product is licensed per physical CPU socket in each server. Each physical CPU socket on the host server(s) requires one CPU licence. Therefore a quad CPU ESX host would require 4 CPU licences. It does not matter how many cores there are on each physical CPU.
Support and Maintenance
Each new licence requires an initial period of support and maintenance - 1 year and 3 year options are available. Optional renewals are also available.
Editions
vRanger Standard Edition (SE)

vRanger Backup and Replication (also known as vRanger Pro)
