Product Information

Implement a consistent, automated process for managing the lifecycle of virtual machines in the data center, from provisioning to operation to retirement. With VMware Lifecycle Manager, automate the virtualisation workflow to improve efficiency and productivity, and ensure strict corporate compliance with company policies.

Standardise IT Services

During setup, create a catalog of virtual machine templates for users to view and select. These templates help users determine the characteristics of available virtual machines (machine size, memory, storage, backup services, etc.). Also, define what types of approvals are required prior to virtual machine deployment. This feature provides greater control over what type of resources are deployed into the IT environment.

Associate Chargeback Metrics

Associate chargeback metrics to specific virtual machine deployments and resource pools, and assign those metrics to specific business groups or financial systems.

Streamline Request and Approval

Establish a consistent and scalable mechanism with VMware Lifecycle Manager to route and approve all requests for virtual machines, and ensure policy compliance. Log into VMware Lifecycle Manager and make a request for a virtual machine and enter information to help VMware Lifecycle Manager select the specific resources that best support the request. Log back into VMware Lifecycle Manager any time to check request status. Once submitted, requests are routed to the Approver. If the request is approved, a virtual machine is deployed automatically, based on the user-defined criteria and the way in which IT has mapped those criteria to existing computing resources.

Track and Control Virtual Machines

Tracking who owns virtual machines in a virtual environment or keeping record of when they were created, deployed or decommissioned can be challenging. VMware Lifecycle Manager tracks virtual machine deployments with a Web-based request log keeping an accurate record of when the requests are made, approved or denied, when the machine was deployed and how long it has been in operation.

Decommission Virtual Machines

Use VMware Lifecycle Manager to initiate the decommission process, which consists of archiving and ultimately deleting a virtual machine. VMware Lifecycle Manager provides better resource utilisation by ensuring resources come back into the resource pool for future use. Virtual machines are decommissioned based on the length of time they’re needed. VMware Lifecycle Manager archives the virtual machine image prior to decommissioning to enable low-cost storage.

Features

VMware Lifecycle Manager provides an easy-to-use Web interface for managing the interactions among everyone involved in the lifecycle of a virtual machine. There are four main roles and functions in the product:

User

  • Easily request virtual machines and determine request status through an easy-to-use self-service portal.
  • Access a catalog of existing virtual machines with basic controls, including power on, shut down, suspend, snapshot, revert to snapshot, etc.

Approver

  • View and approve or reject requests detailed information about any request and determine whether to accept or deny the request.

IT Staff

  • Complete approved requests and decide where virtual machines will be placed within the environment.

IT Administrator

  • Help users select the virtual machine configuration that best meets their needs by creating a library of pre-defined virtual machine templates.
  • Set up key criteria for policy defined deployment to be used to automatically place or configure a virtual machine in an environment.
  • Assign groups of users to specific virtual machine resources based on established security policies.
  • Optimise resource pools and virtual machine folders, and help associate chargeback metrics to virtual machine deployments.
