Features
UltraBac Backup Features
Active Cluster Server Backup
UltraBac can back up and restore an ACTIVE Windows 2003/XP/2000/NT cluster. This capability has been proven at Microsoft's Redmond Campus test facility. Cluster failover support is also provided on the backup set level. UltraBac automatically restarts the backup if failover occurs during this process.
Auto Update
UltraBac upgrade deployments are a snap with UltraBac's Auto Update. This functionality allows customers to easily deploy updates to hundreds of servers and workstations with minimal user interaction.
Backup Wizard
The backup wizard in UltraBac makes it easy for the user to create backup sets from start to finish. The wizard quickly explains the backup creation, step-by-step. The entire UltraBac product has a well-structured, intuitive user interface.
Barcode Media Pools IMPROVED
Simply add a selection of tapes to a media pool and UltraBac will take care of the rest. It is no longer necessary to specify autoloader slots when scheduling backup jobs. Additional benefits of using media pools include space savings on tape, automatic inventory of bar codes, lower-level administration, and more in-depth logging information. Automated cleaning options for tape libraries are now available.
Client Side Compression
UltraBac integrates client side compression, allowing network backups to run up to one third faster. This standard feature automatically compresses backup files on remote servers and workstations before they are transferred across the network to the centralized backup machine. Client side compression increases backup speed while decreasing the use of network bandwidth.
Command Line Option
UltraBac allows for both GUI-based and command line backups for maximum flexibility in both backups & restores on local and remote hosts. Organizations with minimal technical abilities can directly integrate backup into their processes, based on their own requirements. Most GUI interface functions are also available at command line level, so batch files may be used to automate UltraBac commands if the user prefers. Improvements have been made in many areas including searching media, viewing volume information, preparing media, and ejecting media.
Database Indexing
The database indexing option provides a centralized location to search for a particular file that was backed up. This allows users to search for files and/or file masks, and returns all results from available media in seconds. Simply choose the file to restore, load the index, click restore, and if an autoloader is being used it will load the correct tape and do the restore automatically. This feature will save users valuable time during the restore process. It will even return several different versions of the same file so users can choose the file they wish to restore.
Differential Image Backup
Differential image backups take a full image snapshot then, when subsequent differential images are performed, UltraBac will only back up the sectors that have been modified since the last full image backup, saving space on storage devices. For example, a network administrator could schedule a full image backup once a week on Sunday and only back up the changed sectors Monday through Saturday, allowing him/her to have full image restore capability (down to the day) with little more than a single full image backup stored.
Disk-to-Disk Backup
UltraBac can back up data to any removable media on a network. Disk-to-disk backups are compressed, reducing disk storage requirements and making them VERY FAST. Disk-to-disk incremental backups scheduled at intervals throughout the day can prevent loss of a day's work if a disk crash or other data loss occurs between nightly backups. Supports up to 1500 backup path devices.
Encryption
UltraBac provides a built-in security option giving administrators the ability to protect the privacy of sensitive customer data before it is transferred across a network and onto whatever backup media type selected for use. Many organizations are now required by The Gramm-Leach-Bliley Act to protect sensitive information in order to comply with new privacy laws. The act affects 'any institution the business of which is engaging in activities that are financial in nature, or incidental to such financial activities.' This includes national banks, federally chartered thrifts, FDIC depositories, insurance companies and agencies, securities firms and other companies that offer financial products and/or services. Using Blowfish, UltraBac encrypts the backup with an encryption phrase of up to 68 characters enabling customers the strength of a 448-bit encryption key. The feature allows users to vary the amount of encryption protection as needed. This option gives users powerful data security at no extra charge.
Exchange Agent
UltraBac's Exchange Agent is capable of running local and remote backups of live databases without shutting them down. This minimizes downtime for an Exchange mail server, essential for any enterprise backup scheme. The Exchange Agent uses the Exchange API for fast backup speeds and absolute minimum downtime during restoration. Allows SMTP email notification and single mailbox recovery. Supports Exchange 5.5, Exchange 2000, Exchange 2003, and Exchange 2007 backups.
Express Index
UltraBac's Express Index tremendously improves restore times on DLT and QIC multi-track technology tape drives by pinpointing the exact location of a file on tape. This completely eliminates the need to go back and forth searching for a particular file. Testing has conclusively proven that Express Index can reduce restore times on these types of backup devices from hours to minutes.
FTP Device
The UltraBac FTP Device provides UltraBac with the ability to direct backups to any FTP server compliant with the RFC 959 specification. This makes configuring an offsite backup location extremely easy. An FTP server with sufficient storage (even non-Windows hosts) is all you need. The requirements to configure UltraBac's FTP Device capability are very minimal: an address to a live FTP server, a valid login, and a server-interpreted path specifying where the data should be stored. The FTP Device is integrated seamlessly with UltraBac's Device Manager, thereby allowing the use of heterogeneous storage devices as backup media.
High-Resolution Scheduler IMPROVED
UltraBac's high-resolution scheduler has a flexible filter to define one-time, daily, weekly, and yearly scheduled backups. It has granularity equal to or better than a CRON-based scheduler. The scheduler interface is easily maneuverable and contains useful features like e-mail notification, batch file execution, autoloader support, storage media failover, and error checking options. The scheduler also contains an easy-to-use wizard to guide the user, step-by-step, in the creation of a scheduled backup. The graphical user interface has been enhanced with increased scheduling views, streamlined toolbars, and log file handling
Locked File Backup Agent
Allows backup of locked exclusive files or a file to which 2003/XP/2000/NT can not gain access while open, such as WINS database and local PST files. When UltraBac uses Locked File Backup, it temporarily 'freezes' the partition and backs up all the data on the drive whether or not the data is locked by another application. Users can access the temporarily 'frozen' partition while it is being backed up. Locked File Backup is now even more efficient in CPU and memory usage, and gives users the ability to do differential image backups as well.
Native 64-bit Platform Support
The same version of UltraBac available on 32-bit x86 platforms is now available on Itanium and AMD64 platforms. UltraBac can back up between platforms, and even remotely manage different platforms as well.
NetWare Agent
UltraBac's NetWare agent backs up remote NetWare machines. Versions of NetWare supported are 4.11 and greater. Supports SPX/IPX and TCP/IP protocols.
Oracle Agent
UltraBac's Oracle Agent can run remote or local backups of any Oracle server on the network. The entire agent code has been modified to use the Oracle 'Net8' network technology. This gives system administrators the tools they need to easily back up Oracle databases, which often run mission-critical tasks.
Remote Administration
UltraBac can connect to any other UltraBac console using the 'Connect To' feature. The 'Connect To' feature can be used to create sets on other UltraBac servers, view backup jobs interactively, edit sets or scheduled backup jobs, add new storage devices, and perform other administration tasks.
Remote Installer
UltraBac's Remote Installer centralizes the task of installing or updating the UltraBac application. Administrators simply double click on one setup.exe file to distribute and install the software to chosen servers and workstations on the network. MSI is no longer required for installation so users are able to set up or update as many remote locations as desired without manually installing the software on each machine. For example, an administrator from a remote centralized machine could automate the installation of 10 machines in approximately three minutes.
Remote/Local Server Agent
Gives users the ability to push information from one server to another. The Remote/Local Server Agent compresses the data on the local computer before transferring it across the network, thus increasing backup speed significantly. Another feature of the agent is capturing the System State or Active Directory (for domain controllers) on a local or remote Windows 2003/XP/2000/NT machine. This feature is absolutely essential for disaster recovery on domain controllers. Without an Active Directory backup, it would be impossible to rebuild a crashed domain controller back to its original state. Now this critical task can even be achieved from a remote backup server.
Secure FTP NEW
Secure FTP (SFTP) provides better protection of user information. SFTP is supported so that all information transferred over the internet to the FTP device is encrypted, rather than just the backup sets themselves.
SharePoint Server Agent NEW
UltraBac's SharePoint Server Agent enables organizations running SharePoint to incorporate seamless backup and recovery within multiple layers of collaborative data. The agent's approach is reflective of the architecture in SharePoint itself by allowing multiple copies and versioning of files, and public sharing of files in an organized manner.
Single File Restore from Image Backups
Single File Restore (SFR) capability provides backup administrators the ability to restore single files from an image backup when the SFR option is enabled. Single files are restored using UltraBac's standard GUI. Image backups can be saved to any UNC path or tape device.
Single Mailbox Backup
Using UltraBac's Single Mailbox Backup, mailboxes can be backed up on an individual level. Each top-level object seen through Microsoft Outlook (with the exception of PST files) can be selected and backed up using this feature. In addition to full Exchange server backups using the UltraBac Exchange Agent, this integrated feature provides more fault tolerance, particularly for mission-critical mailboxes. If a mailbox or an object within a mailbox is accidentally deleted through Microsoft Outlook, it may be restored one of two ways — the user can either overwrite the current contents of the Mailbox or temporarily mount the mailbox to a PST file and copy the missing contents from the PST folder to its original location.
SQL Server Agent
UltraBac's SQL Server Agent allows backup of an open Microsoft® SQL Server database without shutting down the database service beforehand. The SQL Server Agent uses Microsoft APIs to run the backup and restore, thereby insuring speed and reliability of the backup. UltraBac can restore a database to its original location or move it from one SQL server to another.
Storage Device Manager
This feature allows the backup administrator to use a remote tape drive on the network as a storage device. Remote autoloader administration can also be accomplished. The Storage Device Manager facilitates centralized backup storage, which can be a much more efficient and organized solution, especially helpful when recovery is needed 'on the fly.' Supports all remote tape devices.
Tivoli Storage Manager Device
UltraBac's Tivoli Storage Manager Device allows UltraBac to write data to a Tivoli Storage Manager server. UltraBac manages the administration of the backup and restore processes, while Tivoli manages the media that these backups are written to. The device is built atop the Tivoli Storage Manager API for a robust interface with the Tivoli Storage Manager architecture, and has been qualified for TSM API levels 4.2 and above. Requires UltraBac Single Server License.
UltraCopy IMPROVED
This very convenient utility is designed to allow duplicate tape copying between tape drives; the ability to duplicate a disk backup to tape; and take multiple disk backups, copy, and consolidate them in their native UltraBac format to tape with built-in media spanning capability. It can also send all backups to disk, while setting up a job to run UltraCopy. This innovative tool then duplicates the backups to tape for offsite storage. This utility, like UltraBac itself, has command line functionality so users can script this process to occur whenever they like. UltraCopy also features library/media pool support, device support verification, and speed enhancements when restoring from UltraCopy.
UNIX Agent
UltraBac's UNIX Agent offers remote back up capabilities for Linux, HP-UX, Sun Solaris, Sun Intel, FreeBSD and Mac OSX. UltraBac now provides much faster enumeration times for all platforms.
Volume Shadow Copy Service NEW
UltraBac provides an option for file-by-file backup customers to use Microsoft's Volume Shadow Copy Service (VSS) to safely freeze open files for backup, in lieu of the proprietary UltraBac Locked File Backup Agent. VSS is a user selectable option for file-by-file, as well as image backups, on both 32 and 64-bit machines.
UBDR PRO - RECOVER A SERVER IN 15 MINUTES OR LESS
UBDR Pro sets the standard in disaster recovery. UltraBac Disaster Recovery (UBDR) Pro uses snapshot, also referred to as image-based, backup and disaster recovery technology to provide lightning fast recovery for users of Windows servers and workstations. The software is compatible with every Windows NT, 2000, 2003, and XP operating system. UBDR Pro uses UltraBac's ability to perform image backups, along with a Windows based universal boot CD environment, to restore one or more disk partitions even when no operating system is available. UBDR Pro can be licensed for independent, stand-alone use, or it can be fully integrated with UltraBac's regular file-by-file backup and restore software.
Using innovative technology, UBDR Pro is designed to be an organization's first line of defense in preventing the undue financial loss associated with unnecessary computer downtime. After installation, an automated scheduler initiates snapshots (an exact image) of selected partitions to local tape or disk, or any network UNC path. A built-in Locked File Backup Agent ensures all files are backed up safely so they can be restored with integrity when required. The UltraBac Image Agent backs up only the active disk clusters within a partition, ignoring non-pertinent page files and hibernation files, saving on media space used and increasing restore speeds. Furthermore, the snapshot is compressed on the client side. This not only reduces network traffic when being backed up to a remote storage location, but also increases the overall throughput speed of the entire backup process.
Due to its fast transfer rate, UBDR Pro can restore a crashed machine's operating system partition in a matter of minutes - not the hours it normally takes to rebuild a machine using the standard file-by-file backup and restore method for recovering a failed system. The difference in the time and effort saved in recovering a failed machine using UBDR Pro versus other methods is substantial. UBDR Pro can restore at speeds of up to 3GB/minute on high-speed Gigabit networks or from local tape devices like LTO2 tape. To recover a dead server, a user need only insert the universal UBDR Pro CD, boot the machine to run the restore wizard, and initiate a restore with just a few clicks of the mouse. No other setup is required. After restoring a snapshot, a machine is recovered 100 percent to its last backup state after a quick reboot. UBDR Pro also offers built-in encryption so users can fully comply with security requirements for backup media stored either on or off-site.
Users have the option of performing either differential or incremental image backups after each new full image backup. The differential method provides a full recovery by first restoring the last full and then the last differential backup. The incremental method provides a full recovery by first restoring the last full and then each incremental backup in ascending date order.
Image technology can also be used to replicate new machines, perform system software upgrades, snapshot a stable machine before installing new hardware or software, and upgrade OS hard drives to larger sizes. All of these functions can be performed using UBDR Pro to add value to its ability to quickly restore a failed machine to operational status.
UBDR Pro Highlights:
- Live OS backup to tape, disk, or network UNC path.
- Back up active sectors only to minimize media requirements.
- Ignores page files and hibernation file data.

UBDR GOLD - BARE METAL DISASTER RECOVERY. BUSINESS CONTINUITY. CONTINUOUS DATA PROTECTION.
UBDR Gold raises the bar in disaster recovery. UltraBac
Disaster Recovery (UBDR) Gold uses snapshot (image) based backup and disaster recovery technology to provide lightning fast physical or virtual restores. The software works with every Windows server or workstation, and can be used to perform dissimilar hardware restores. UBDR Gold uses UltraBac's ability to perform live image backups, along with a WinPE boot CD or USB key, to restore one or more disk partitions - even to a larger capacity disk drive right out of the box. UltraBac's Locked File Backup Agent is also integrated with UBDR Gold to ensure open files are backed up safely during the image process. UBDR Gold can be licensed for independent, stand-alone use, or it can be fully integrated with UltraBac's regular file-by-file backup and restore software.
UBDR Gold provides customers all the features of UBDR Pro along with the ability to perform virtual based disaster recoveries using either VMware or Microsoft Virtual Server 2005 host machines. Optional agents for TSM, SFTP/FTP, and media libraries are also offered with UBDR Gold. Another strategic feature of Gold is its ability to cold boot a machine and perform image or file based backups to literally every type of storage device: SAN, NAS, UNC path, local disk, TSM, SFTP/FTP, USB/FireWire, local/remote tape devices, and media libraries. This means an administrator can boot a failed machine and safely back up data partitions before allowing a technician access to data that could be irretrievably lost during the repair effort.
Continuous Data Protection.
With the introduction of UBDR Gold’s latest technology, Continuous Image Protection (CIP), the software continues to add to its first to market feature list. CIP is a form of continuous data protection (CDP) with a new innovation: unlike standard image backups which run on a periodic basis, UBDR Gold’s CIP functionality continuously monitors all new blocks written to a protected disk partition and backs up these changes in near real-time. Utilizing traditional image backups, when a failure occurs you might be restoring a static image that could be up to 23 hours old. With CIP installed, your system can be brought back to a point-in-time only minutes, even seconds, old.
True dissimilar hardware capability.
Perform dissimilar hardware restores with UBDR Gold's physical-to-physical (P2P) disaster recovery feature. This means, for example, if a Compaq DL380 G3 server fails, a backup up OS image can be restored to a Dell PowerEdge 2950 and successfully booted.
UBDR Gold was the first Windows backup software to offer physical-to-virtual (P2V) based disaster recoveries. This allows organizations to recover a server and emulate it virtually 100% in as little as 15 minutes. To perform a P2V recovery, simply create as many new virtual environments as required on your host virtual server. Then use UBDR Gold to boot into the recovery wizard. Recovering to a virtual environment is automatic and requires no special setup, pre-configuration, or other considerations. Gold also supports virtual-to-virtual (V2V) and virtual-to-physical (V2P) recoveries, providing users with every available virtual disaster recovery option.
Integrating SFTP and FTP into disaster recovery was another first for UBDR Gold. With an SFTP/FTP recovery, an image can be restored from a LAN, WAN, or the Internet. UBDR Gold is also unique in that it directly supports local tape, local libraries, remote tape, and remote libraries. The major advantage of image backups to disk is lightning fast disaster recovery. Using tape however, still has many strategic benefits. UltraCopy (another first to market product), UltraBac Software’s optional disk-to-tape utility, offers inexpensive and redundant storage of unlimited numbers of backup copies for the ultimate in off-site data protection and disaster recovery.
Sophisticated customers also appreciate that UBDR Gold can be 100 percent scripted for both backups and restores. This means remote sites can be fully recovered automatically without any local administration. Unbootable servers can be quickly restored and brought back online. Instructing non-technical personnel through a difficult disaster recovery process is replaced with this seamless and completely automatic process.
