Microsoft SharePoint Server 2010, available as an on-premise or hosted solution, provides comprehensive collaboration capabilities for your business. SharePoint 2010 empowers your employees to access resources and share their knowledge, whatever their location and device. New Features

New and improved services

• Access Services - new service to enable viewing and editing of Access databases via either a browser or the Access client
• Excel Services - supports new client-side features such as Slicers which provide easier data filtering and supports multi-user real-time collaboration on workbooks for users viewing/editing a file via a browser
• PerformancePoint Services - PerformancePoint Server 2007 functionality is now completely integrated into SharePoint 2010 Enterprise. New features include an improved Dashboard Designer, enhanced analytic reporting capabilities, improved scorecard system, enhanced time/date filtering and more
• Visio Services - new service that enables rendering of Visio Web drawings (.vdw) to the browser, via SharePoint. Does not require any special software on the client. You can even refresh any data connections in the Visio drawing to update the graphics and text fields

New health monitoring capabilities

• A new health analysis tool called SharePoint Maintenance Manager proactively monitors your SharePoint Server(s) to automatically alert you to any potential configuration, performance or usage problems. Any potential errors are written to a special Health Report list and to the Windows Event log.

Improved search

• Improved enterprise search now provides enhanced query capabilities with support for boolean operators ('AND', 'OR', 'NOT'), prefix matching and wildcard support, search suggestions as you type and 'did you mean' suggestions after searching
• Improvements to search results page include a new refinement panel which displays a summary of results and enables users to filter results by content type, location, author and date modified
• People search capabilities enable employees to find people in your company by name, department, job title, location and more. Even search by writing a name phonetically or by using nicknames
• Search result relevance has been improved with ranking based on search result history and relevance based on inferred metadata (metadata that is inferred by SharePoint when the real metadata is missing or potentially incorrect).

Enhanced Business Connectivity Services (BCS)

• The improved BCS enables connection through SharePoint to external data. New features include support for full create, read, update, delete and query options for data in an external system, offline data read/write operation support, more connectivity options, support for BLOB fields, enhanced API's and much more.

New social tools

• New support for data-rich personal profiles, improved blog, wiki and RSS support, tagging capabilities and more help to create a collaborative environment. Use ratings and comments to provide quick feedback on content, use enterprise wikis to store and share information in a structured way and quickly find who you need with the new organisation browser.

Office Web Apps

• If you own Microsoft Office 2010 on a Microsoft volume licensing scheme you can deploy Office 2010 Web Apps on your SharePoint Server. Office Web Apps allows users to view and edit Word, Excel, PowerPoint and OneNote files directly from their browser which provides a seamless experience when viewing and editing files stored in SharePoint document libraries.
