Working together with SAP Crystal Reports and SAP Crystal Dashboard Design, SAP Crystal Server can help you to securely access reports and dashboards, monitor business performance, personalise reports, integrate reporting into SharePoint, .NET and Java apps, and much more.

New in SAP Crystal Solutions 2011

  • A new name - SAP Crystal Server 2011 is the next version of Crystal Reports Server 2008 and is faster and easier to use than ever before
  • Self-service access to relevant information - SAP Crystal Server 2011 now includes SAP BusinessObjects Explorer software. Now it's easy to search, filter and reorder business data without knowing the underlying databases or data models. Plus you can easily share your insights via exporting, bookmarking or email. Note: support for SAP BusinessObjects Explorer is only available with named user licences of SAP Crystal Server.
  • Engaging UI - the updated user interface makes it easier to transition between SAP Crystal Server and the SAP BusinessObjects Explorer applications
  • Common query panel across all tools - a common query panel makes it easier to access data through the universe semantic layer, whether you’re designing a report, designing a dashboard, or exploring data
  • Integrate hierarchical data - the universe component enables access to both OLAP and relational data without flattening the OLAP hierarchy or losing its structure
  • New report design tool - specially optimised for use with universes (requires an SAP Crystal Reports 2011 key code)
  • Easier data access - simplify data access by leveraging universes built with the new report design tool

  • SDK enhancements - the SDK has been enhanced in the following areas: alerting, data security, role-based authentication, auditing and business intelligence archive resource (BIAR) files
  • A note on usage recommendations - If you need to create and modify reports based on the universe semantic layer, it is recommended that you use the report design tool in SAP Crystal Server. A license of SAP Crystal Reports 2011 is required to activate this tool. If you need to create and modify reports that require access to Open Database Connectivity (ODBC) or other direct data sources, it is recommended that you use SAP Crystal Reports 2011. SAP plans to add direct-to-data access to the report design tool in a future release.

  • Search and exploration - SAP BusinessObjects Explorer enables you to use a simple keyword search to get the business information you need from across all your data sources. Find hidden or lost information without relying on existing reports or metrics.
  • Common semantic layer - All three client tools – SAP Crystal Reports, SAP Crystal Dashboard Design, and SAP BusinessObjects Explorer share an abstraction layer that sits on top of your data sources, simplifying them for use by business users. You don't need to know database table names or how to join multiple tables together.
  • Accelerated report design - The report design tool delivered with SAP Crystal Server provides innovations such as smart guidelines, which are designed to make it easy to move and resize columns without affecting adjacent columns.
  • Reports and dashboards on a single server - Securely view, share, schedule, and deliver reports designed with SAP Crystal Reports software and dashboards from SAP Crystal Dashboard Design software. Reduce costs through a single server for both reports and dashboards. (Please note: SAP Crystal Dashboard Design support Dashboard Builder is limited to Named User Licenses only.)
  • Zero-client user interface - Infoview gives end users instant, secure access to corporate reports and dashboards over the Web with a single URL. Deploy the out-of-the-box portal or customise it using a portal integration kit.
  • Interactive report viewers - Print, export, and drill down on charts and other report objects over the Web. Use on-report parameter panels, sort controls, and support for embedded Flash to become more productive and to reduce the number of reports needed to answer critical business questions.
  • Collaboration - Threaded discussions – a fully integrated feature of the InfoView environment – enable users to create and maintain comments on any report accessible in SAP Crystal Server.
  • Web service design tool - SAP Crystal Server also includes a Web service design tool that enables you to access any object linking and embedding database (OLE DB) or ODBC data source (for example, Microsoft SQL, Oracle, MySQL, or IBM DB2). You can expose company data via Web services for consumption in SAP Crystal Dashboard Design or any service-oriented application without writing a single line of code.

  • Data-driven publishing – Publish personalised reports such as invoices, statements, and marketing materials to thousands of recipients. You can base a single SAP Crystal Reports document on multiple data sources, personalise it for each recipient, combine multiple documents into a single file (such as Adobe PDF), and distribute it to a dynamic list of recipients. (Please note: this functionality is only available with CALs)
  • On-demand and offline consumption – Use crystalreports.com (sold separately) to provide secure information access via the Web for users inside and outside your organisation. And explore your reports interactively – even offline – with SAP Crystal Reports Viewer software, a free download available separately.
  • Report scheduler – Set up reports to run at specific times or based on specific events. Plus, schedule reports to generate in specific formats such as Excel, PDF, and RTF.

INTEGRATE

  • Microsoft Reporting Services – Integrate your existing Microsoft Reporting Services reports into SAP Crystal Server. Your SAP Crystal Dashboard Design content can access data within a Microsoft Reporting Services report, and you can create hyperlinks to existing Microsoft Reporting Services reports from within the SAP Crystal Server portal.
  • Microsoft Office – Integration with Microsoft Office provides support for the major recent versions of Microsoft Office, including Microsoft Office 2000, 2003, XP, and 2007.
  • SharePoint and Java Portal access – Make reports available anywhere in your organisation by publishing them on your corporate portal. Java and SharePoint Portal Integration Kits (PIK) are supported.
  • .NET and Java APIs – Leverage your existing IT investments by easily integrating SAP Crystal Server with your custom-built applications.



Licensing

Licensing

Crystal Server can either be purchased with Concurrent Access Licences (CALs) or Named User Licences (NULs):

  • Concurrent Access Licences (CALs): provides access to any individual up to the number of CALs purchased. If you bought 10 CALs, up to 10 employees can access reports, dashboards etc. but no more than 10 employees can do so at any one time. CALs are intended for casual reporting users.
  • Named User Licences (NULs): provides guaranteed access for named individuals to reports, dashboards, Dashboard Builder functionality etc. NULs are intended for users that require guaranteed access to reports, dashboards, data exploration and BI workspaces.

Maintenance

Maintenance is available for Crystal Server and enables you to receive support for the product along with all major and minor upgrades for the term of your subscription.

Data-driven Publishing

If you require publishing functionality, the number of recipients varies depending on the number of CALs purchased:

  • 5 CALs - 100 recipients
  • 10 CALs - 250 recipients
  • 20 CALs - 1000 recipients
  • 250 CALs - unlimited recipients

Notes

  • Note that a single deployment cannot exceed 250 CALs and 100 NULs
  • Data-driven publishing is only available with CALs
  • SAP Crystal Dashboard Design viewing and Dashboard Builder functionality are only available with NULs
  • Clustering, load balancing, and failover are not supported.
  • For each deployment, SAP Crystal Server may be installed and used only on a single server.

Notes for developers

  • Developers who use this technology to build applications that will be redistributed, sold, or deployed to a third party, need to purchase a copy of SAP Crystal Server for each installation.
  • An OEM license is required when granting access to commercial applications that use SAP Crystal Server to third parties.
