New Features

New Features in PRTG Network Monitor 9

Over 120 new sensor types!

Take advantage of a whole range of new sensors in PRTG Network Monitor 9, including:

  • QoS sensor for two way monitoring sends data packets back and forth between two probes and measures the quality of service
  • SSH ESX disk sensor to monitor free space on ESX(i) systems using SSH
  • WMI physical disk sensor
  • WMI Hyper-V virtual network adapter sensor to help monitoring of Hyper-V virtual machines
  • SNMP string sensor to monitor OIDs that return a string
  • Registry sensor for monitoring registry activity
  • Health sensors for the PRTG probe, core, cluster and system for monitoring internal status and the status of the system PRTG runs on
  • Monitor VMware, Dell, HP and APC hardware with a range of new sensors
  • Enhancements to QoS sensors introduce support for DSCP/TOS settings to set QoS parameters inside UDP test packets and they now calculate MOS values
  • And much more: enhancements to xFlow sensors, the DNS sensor, SSH sensors and more.

IPv6 support

70% of available sensor types now support IPv6 including the ICMP, SNMP, WMI, HTTP sensors, most TCP sensors and the packet sniffer sensor.

Enterprise console

What was the 'Windows GUI' has transitioned to the 'Enterprise Console' where you can view data from multiple PRTG Network Monitor core installations. It can connect to one or several PRTG servers and displays aggregate information for all servers ('horizontal scaling'). It includes numerous new features including almost all the functionality available from within the Web GUI.

Enhancements to device trees

Users can build their own device trees called 'libraries'. Each library contains an alternative view of the device tree so, for example, users can create a list of sensors displayed the way they want them to be seen, regardless of the device they're originally running on. Monitoring objects in device tree libraries can be moved or cloned by simply dragging and dropping.

Enhanced web interface

Significant enhancements have been made to the PRTG Network Monitor web interface, including:

  • Improved appearance for the entire web interface
  • New 'Welcome Assistant' for improved user guidance on initial setup
  • A new 'rights report' displays user access rights for monitoring objects and how these rights are inherited from parent objects
  • New multi-edit function for sensor channel settings
  • Rewrite of 'notifications trigger' editing and 'sensor selection' screen
  • 'Acknowledge until' feature acknowledges alarms for a specified period of time
  • 'Pause until' feature pauses a sensor for a specified period of time
  • Enhanced performance for AJAX functionality
  • Desktop notification support when using the Google Chrome web browser
  • Plus much more!

Active Directory integration

Get simplified user and rights management through the integration of PRTG Network Monitor into an existing Microsoft Active Directory service. This makes it much easier to manage large numbers of users that have access to the PRTG interface.

And more

  • Easier installation - there are now 4 fewer installation screens and fewer questions asked of the user during installation
  • Improved auto discovery - added auto-discovery support for IPv6 and discovery of a device's vendor by analysing its MAC address
  • Enhanced cluster functionality - users can easily switch between cluster nodes
  • Automatic download of new versions - when a new version of PRTG is made available, the program will automatically download the latest version and will notify you about the update (if you have an active maintenance contract).

Benefits

Optimise Your Network and Avoid System Downtimes

Businesses increasingly rely on their networks to move data, provide communication, and enable basic operations. Performance loss or system outages can seriously impact the bottom line of your business. Continuous network and server monitoring enables you to find problems and resolve them before they become a serious threat to your business:

  • Avoid bandwidth and server performance bottlenecks
  • Deliver better quality of service to your users by being proactive
  • Reduce costs by buying bandwidth and hardware based on actual load
  • Increase profits by avoiding losses caused by undetected system failures
  • Find peace of mind: As long as you do not hear from PRTG via email, SMS, pager, etc. you know everything is running fine and you have more time to take care of other important business

Your Entire Network at a Glance

PRTG Network Monitor covers all aspects of network monitoring: up-/downtime monitoring, traffic and usage monitoring, SNMP, NetFlow, packet sniffing and many more, combined with concise reporting and analysis features – one clear and simple solution for your entire network.

Performance and Availability Monitoring

PRTG Network Monitor includes a range of sensor types for all common network services (e.g. PING, HTTP, SMTP, POP3, FTP, etc.), allowing you to monitor your network systems for speed and failures. As soon as outages occur the software will alert you by sending emails, SMS, pager messages or other notifications. Request times and downtimes are constantly recorded in the database and you can compile performance, downtime and SLA reports at any given time.

Bandwidth and Network Usage Monitoring

PRTG Network Monitor runs 24/7 on a Windows-based machine within your network, recording network usage parameters. Recorded data is stored in a database for historic reports.

The easy to use web-based user interface allows you to configure the devices and sensors that you want to monitor. You can create usage reports and provide colleagues and customers access to graphs and tables.

All common methods for network usage data acquisition are supported:

  • SNMP and WMI - WMI (Windows Management Instrumentation) and SNMP (Simple Network Management Protocol) are used to gather bandwidth usage and performance data for all systems within your network, including port-by-port usage data for switches and routers. SNMP works with Windows, Linux and Mac.
  • Packet Sniffing - With its integrated packet sniffing capability PRTG can inspect all network data packets travelling in your LAN or WLAN to calculate the bandwidth usage
  • NetFlow and sFlow - Professional routers and switches from vendors like Cisco, HP, Juniper, and others support NetFlow or sFlow export for bandwidth usage monitoring. It is the most powerful monitoring method, suitable for high traffic networks

Licensing

Paessler PRTG Network Monitor is licenced by the number of sensors. There are two special licences that support an unlimited number of sensors:

  • Unlimited Licence - can only be installed on one computer
  • Corporate Licence - allows multiple installations of the core server in different sites of one corporation, as long as these sites are in the same country.

A sensor is defined as any particular, individual monitoring entity, e.g. monitoring one network service, one url, one CPU load etc.

Subscriptions

When purchasing a license you receive 12 months of software maintenance.

During the time of this software maintenance

  • you can log in to download the latest version for free at any time (this includes all bugfixes and all new versions of the product that you have purchased)
  • you are entitled to receive priority email support via the support-ticket system
  • you can log in to re-request your license key for free at any time.

The software maintenance can be renewed after one year. For your convenience, we will give you advance notification before your maintenance plan expires.

After expiration, you will no longer be able to access new versions. When you extend your software maintenance plan, Paessler will sum up the total maintenance packages and calculate the duration from the time of the initial purchase of the license on.

In the case of support issues, priority is always given to customers with maintenance contracts.
