New Features

Co-authoring Capabilities

Completely new co-authoring functionality enables multiple individuals to collaborate on Word 2010, PowerPoint 2010 and OneNote 2010 documents. Each individual can see who is working on the document and start a conversation with them. All modifications are highlighted to make version control even easier.

Office Web Apps

New Office Web Apps lets you access and share your documents from your web browser or mobile device and even make lightweight edits. Office Web Apps works with Word 2010, Excel 2010 (through Excel Web App), PowerPoint 2010 and OneNote 2010 documents. For boxed (retail) editions, Office Web Apps are available freely through Windows Live (currently in Technical Preview) and for volume licence customers, Office Web Apps can be deployed internally on your SharePoint server.

Enhanced User Interface

Office 2010 introduces the new productivity enhancing Ribbon interface to every Office application including Outlook 2010, OneNote 2010, Publisher 2010, InfoPath 2010 and Office Web Apps. Also new is the Microsoft Office Backstage view which replaces the file menu of Office 2007. It's designed to offer easy access to common functionality when opening or finishing a document - such as printing commands now combined into to one Print tab - and is completely extensible so IT can incorporate data and tasks from their own back-end systems into Office 2010. The ribbon also has an enhanced visual style and improved customisation capabilities.

New Visual Effects

New professional visual effects can be applied across documents in Word 2010, PowerPoint 2010, Publisher 2010 and more. Crop images into non-rectangular shapes, swap pictures via drag-and-drop, add captions, add newly styled fades and reflections and much more.

New in Outlook 2010 - Conversation View

Outlook 2010 introduces a new conversation view so you can more easily view and manage multiple related emails. Emails get intelligently grouped based on subject which can result in saving valuable space in your inbox. Additionally you can hide conversations you aren't interested in by ignoring all past and future emails with that subject.

New in Excel 2010 - Enhanced Data Analysis

Excel 2010 introduces Sparklines, small single-cell charts that can quickly provide a visual representation of some data and Slicers which can improve data analysis when using PivotTables and CUBE functions. They make it significantly easier to filter your data in an interactive way and a single Slicer can filter multiple PivotTables. PivotTables themselves have been enhanced with improved performance, OLAP write-back support, named and dynamic set support and PowerPivot - a freely available Excel 2010 add-in to process large datasets in seconds.

New in OneNote 2010 - Improved Search and Notes Linking

New and improved features in OneNote 2010 include enhanced search so that you can quickly find what you're looking for as you type, linked notes which automatically link to the application you reference (such as IE, Word 2010 and PowerPoint 2010) and touch-enabled support so you can completely control OneNote using touch on Windows 7.

New in PowerPoint 2010 - Remote Broadcasting and Enhanced Video

New in PowerPoint 2010 are broadcasting capabilities to instantly and remotely display your PowerPoint presentation via a web browser or mobile device and new video editing and formatting tools so you can directly add and control videos from within PowerPoint. For example, insert a video directly from the internet and add playback controls directly to your slides.

New in Access 2010

Access 2010 introduces support for Web databases so users can use your database in a browser, you can now export data to a .PDF file or to an .XPS file, you can connect to Web services as an external data source and you can use new SQL Server 2008 data types such as date, time, geography and geometry.

New in SharePoint Workspace (previously Groove) 2010

SharePoint Workspace introduces close collaboration with SharePoint Server. Work on SharePoint-based documents offline and automatically synchronise changes you make when you come back online. You can continue to create Groove workspaces and share folders too if you do not want SharePoint integration.

New in InfoPath 2010

There are a range of new features in InfoPath 2010 including pre-build pages and section layouts so you can build your forms quicker, new form controls including picture buttons, date and time pickers, person pickers and a signature line control so users can add their own digital signatures, new ready-to-use form rules which are easier to apply, enhanced publishing capabilities and more.

Differences with the Outlook component.
The Outlook component is not the same in each edition of Office, but a further confusion is that if you wish to operate Personal Archive and Retention policies with Exchange Server then only the 'stand-alone editions of Outlook, or the Outlook included in Ultimate or Professional Plus or Enterprise (2007), not retail Professional, support that functionality.
