Product Information

System Center 2012 helps you manage your servers and client devices across datacenters, private and public clouds. With System Center you can capture information about systems, policies and processes, manage, monitor and deploy software, protect data and more.

System Center 2012 comprises App Controller, Operations Manager, Orchestrator, Service Manager, Virtual Machine Manager, Data Protection Manager, Endpoint Protection and Configuration Manager.

Features

Configuration Manager

System Center Configuration Manager 2012 makes it easy to manage physical, virtual and mobile clients.

Enhance user productivity

  • Manage a wide range of mobile devices with a single management console for policies, asset management and compliance reporting.
  • Provides optimised application delivery based on user identity, device type and network capabilities.
  • Users can securely self-provision applications with an easy-to-use web catalogue.

Unify IT management infrastructure

  • A single unified tool can manage all client desktops, thin clients, mobile devices and virtual desktops.
  • Consolidate antimalware protection, vulnerability prevention and remediation, and compliance reporting.
  • Reduce infrastructure costs through server role consolidation and scalability enhancements.

Simplify administration

  • Deliver world-class inventory, operating system deployment, update management, assessment, and settings enforcement.
  • Organise administrative tasks by role and define an application once for delivery across multiple devices.
  • Provides continuous settings enforcement to automatically identify and remediate non-compliant machines.

Endpoint Protection (previously Forefront Endpoint Protection 2012)

Built on System Center 2012 Configuration Manager, System Center 2012 Endpoint Protection allows you to consolidate desktop security and management in a single solution.

  • Single infrastructure for client management and security - deploy and manage endpoint protection using the same infrastructure you use for Configuration Manager.
  • Powerful malware detection - uses the same powerful malware detection capabilities as Microsoft Security Essentials to protect against known and unknown threats, with a low false positive rate.
  • Improved visibility for identifying and remediating vulnerabilities - get detailed, aggregated antimalware, patching, inventory and usage information.

Data Protection Manager

Delivers unified data protection for Windows servers such as SQL Server, Exchange, SharePoint and file servers, along with Windows desktops and laptops.

  • Exchange, SQL and SharePoint support - offers integrated support for advanced Exchange and SQL cluster configurations, shorter SQL backup windows without the need for compression, as well as advanced SharePoint data protection options.
  • Lossless recovery - enables lossless recovery of Exchange, SQL, and SharePoint servers without the need for constant replication or synchronisation.
  • Fast file recovery - perform recoveries in minutes, saving money for the business and time for IT administrators.
  • Reduced downtime - by moving only the byte-level changes of the file servers being backed up, DPM effectively eliminates the downtime required to back up your file servers.
  • Self-service - lets you access and retrieve files directly within Microsoft Windows (versions XP through Windows 7) and Microsoft Office (versions 2007 through 2010) applications without administrator intervention.

Virtual Machine Manager

Comprehensive management solution for virtualised infrastructures running on Windows Server with Hyper-V or VMware ESX through Virtual Center.

  • Maximise IT resources - delivers end-to-end support for consolidating physical servers onto a virtual infrastructure; fast and reliable physical-to-virtual machine conversions; intelligent placement of virtual workloads on physical host servers that match workload requirements and a centralised console for resource management and optimisation.
  • Achieve agility - enables rapid deployment of virtual machines, centralised control of the “building blocks' of the virtual datacenter, and delegated self-provisioning by authorised end-users.
  • Leverage existing skills - utilises IT’s existing Windows expertise while minimising the need for extensive retraining of administrators and help desk personnel.

Operations Manager

Operations Manager provides deep visibility into the health, performance and availability of your datacenter environments – across applications, operating systems, hypervisors and even hardware.

  • Improve service health - improve services health while driving alignment with business SLAs. Operations Manager provides easy to use reporting and authoring capabilities.
  • Unified management - Operations Manager provides you with a single pane of glass or unified view of your complete datacenter, including application and infrastructure components across Windows and non-Windows environments.
  • Dynamically respond to change - Operations Manager enables you to dynamically respond to changes with automated action to ensure continued service performance and availability. With deep PRO integration and Powershell based automation, Operations Manager allows you to take action to remediate a service right from the console.

Service Manager

Delivers an integrated platform for automating and adapting IT Service Management best practices to your organisation's requirements.

  • User-centric support - self-service capabilities enable end-users to resolve many issues on their own.
  • Datacenter management efficiency - leveraging information gathered from sources such as Active Directory Domain Services and System Center into its configuration management database (CMDB), Service Manager 2010 uses templates and easily defined workflows to automate the creation and coordinated management of incident, problem, and change management work items.
  • Business alignment - optimises your organisation's resources to align to business goals and adapt to ever-changing business requirements.
  • IT governance, risk and compliance - Microsoft System Center provides integrated solutions and in-depth automation to help enable IT organisations deliver their IT Governance, Risk and Compliance responsibilities in an operationally efficient manner.

App Controller

New in System Center 2012, App Controller provides a common self-service experience across private and public clouds that can help you easily configure, deploy, and manage virtual machines and services across private and public clouds.

  • Easily configure, deploy, and manage services through a highly intuitive service-centric interface, while using a library of standard templates.
  • Create, manage and move services using a web-based interface that presents a customised view of resources based on your role in the organisation and enables you to focus on managing services rather than servers.
  • View private and public cloud services and virtual machines and get granular control of components at each layer, along with the ability to track jobs and maintain a detailed history of changes.

Orchestrator

System Center Orchestrator is a workflow management solution for the data center. Orchestrator lets you automate the creation, monitoring and deployment of resources in your environment.

Licensing

Server Management Licensing

Both Standard and Datacenter Server Management Licences include the same features and capabilities, including: App Controller, Configuration Manager, Data Protection Manager, Endpoint Protection, Operations Manager, Orchestrator, Service Manager and Virtual Machine Manager.

The difference comes with the virtualisation rights for the licences:

  • Standard - support for 2 virtual machines per licence
  • Datacenter - support for unlimited virtual machines per licence.

Note: VMs are equivalent to managed operating system environments (OSEs).

Client Management Licensing

Required for the management and protection of client systems:

  • Configuration Manager Client Management Licence - for Configuration Manager and Virtual Machine Manager
  • Endpoint Protection Subscription - for Endpoint Protection
  • Client Management Suite Client Management Licence - for Data Protection Manager, Operations Manager, Orchestrator and Service Manager.

If you have Core CAL licences, you already have client licences for Configuration Manager and Endpoint Protection. If you have the Enterprise CAL suite then you additionally have client licences for the Client Management Suite.
