Updated Interface

• Project 2010 now includes the Ribbon bar, providing intuitive, fast access to Project functionality. The task-oriented tabs, complete with descriptive tooltips and the quick access toolbar help to improve your productivity.
• The new Microsoft Office Backstage view provides logical access to common tasks when opening and finishing documents and is completely extensible so developers can add back-office functionality required by your business.
• New zoom controls on the Project 2010 status bar enable you to quickly change the visible timeline of your project
• The new Excel-like experience when viewing projects enhances copy and paste, makes it easier to add additional columns dynamically, introduces auto-complete for grid cells, automatically text wraps cells, introduces advanced, yet easy-to-use filtering capabilities and enhances formatting capabilities

Enhanced Scheduling

• Project members can now manually schedule tasks or have them automatically scheduled with calculated dates and durations
• Enter placeholder text in Project fields and fill them in properly at a later date
• Red lines help you to identify potential scheduling problems
• Create high level forecasts by using manually scheduled Top Down Summary Tasks
• Compare manually scheduled summary tasks with information rolled up from subtasks
• In Project Professional, perform what-if analysis by modifying tasks states to active/inactive

New Timeline View

• Get a visual overview of your project's schedule with the Timeline view. Start from a high-level overview and drill down into project details.
• Quickly identify your project's phases and tasks as they are instantly identifiable.
• Share your timeline with others by copying the timeline into an email, presentation or other document.

Updated Team Planner (Project Professional 2010 only)

• The Team Planner provides a resource view that helps you to visually see an overview of your resources and assign them to tasks and individuals.
• Via drag-and-drop you can easily plan tasks and optimise resource usage.
• Easily identify unassigned or unscheduled tasks and automatically level over allocated resources.
• View task-level details by hovering over task titles.

Improved Collaboration (Project Professional 2010 only)

• Share your projects in more ways with close integration with SharePoint Foundation 2010. Publish schedules to SharePoint Foundation task lists where project members can update their schedule on SharePoint and it automatically gets synchronised back into Project. Or convert SharePoint Foundation 2010 task lists to fully-fledged Project 2010 schedules.
• Use the new Office Backstage view to more easily share or print your projects. You can now export to PDF or XPS without requiring any plug-ins.
• Use Project Professional 2010 with Project Server 2010 and gain powerful dash boarding functionality, improved tools to control projects and much more.

New in Project Server 2010

• Functionality exclusive to Project Portfolio Server 2007 is now integrated into Project Server 2010. This means you now get all the portfolio capabilities so you can identify, select, manage and deliver portfolios that meet with your strategic priorities.
• Project Server is built on top of SharePoint Server 2010 meaning you can take advantage of all of SharePoint's advanced functionality including enterprise search, workflow processes and report and dashboard creation.
• New demand management module can capture all work, project information, cost estimates and more and helps develop and deploy effective governance workflows to manage project investments throughout their lifecycle and drive accountability and control.
• Portfolio selection techniques include prioritising of competing requests, optimisation scenarios under varying budget constraints and maximisation of resource utilisation.
• Edit your Project Professional projects online with new web-based editing capabilities. Make simple project edits, schedule and reschedule tasks, highlight changes and more.
• Enhanced reporting capabilities include close integration with Excel, PerformancePoint and Visio Services, predefined best practice report templates, report customisation capabilities through Excel, simplified dashboard creation tools and more.
• Administration tasks are now easier. A new central console provides access to all administrator features, administrators can delegate project permission setup to project managers, users can define delegates without administrative assistance and more.
• Integrate with Exchange Server - update your project tasks via Outlook and stay connected with notifications and updates through OWA.

Editions

Project Standard 2010

Best for individuals and small teams, Project Standard provides project scheduling and timeline views, includes the new Ribbon user interface and provides limited resource management capabilities.

Project Professional 2010

Best for business, Project Professional also adds more comprehensive resource management capabilities in the form of a team planner and adds collaboration features such as synchronisation with SharePoint Foundation 2010 task lists, copy and paste functionality between other Office applications and integration with Project Server 2010.

Project Server 2010

Ideal for businesses and enterprises who require Project and Portfolio Management (PPM) capabilities. Project Server helps control project management, improve project selection and strategic alignment, maximise resource utilisation and visualise performance through dashboards.
