Fujitsu provides three NetCOBOL packages for Windows and three for .NET.

Overview of Editions

NetCOBOL for .NET:
There is only one NetCOBOL for .NET product, but the edition dictates whether buying it alone or with the Standard or Enterprise editions of NetCOBOL for Windows.

NetCOBOL for Windows:
The three NetCOBOL for Windows packages, in descending order of price and functionality, are:

  • NetCOBOL for Windows Enterprise Edition
  • NetCOBOL for Windows Professional Edition
  • NetCOBOL for Windows Standard Edition

Choosing the right NetCOBOL
Targeting only .NET:
If you only want to write applications for the .NET environment you need NetCOBOL for .NET Professional, unless you need some functions that are not currently supported in the .NET product such as SORT/MERGE or ASSIGN TO PRINTER files, in which case you need NetCOBOL for .NET Developer.

Targeting both Windows and .NET:
If you want to write applications for both the Windows and .NET environments then you need either NetCOBOL for .NET Universal, or NetCOBOL for .NET Developer. The .NET component of both packages is the same. Therefore the decision between Universal and Developer depends on the functionality you require in the Windows environment. Universal contains NetCOBOL for Windows Enterprise Edition, and Developer contains NetCOBOL for Windows Standard Edition.

Targeting only Windows:
If you only want to write applications for Windows, you need NetCOBOL for Windows. NetCOBOL for Windows is available in three editions. The edition required is dependent on features and tools that match your required criteria.
Note: The Enterprise Edition includes all the features and tools that are available in the Professional and Standard editions and the Professional Edition includes all features and tools that are available in the Standard Edition.

NetCOBOL (previously called Fujitsu COBOL) for Windows is a complete COBOL development environment that allows you to create standalone COBOL applications and/or COBOL components for use with Microsoft visual tools. NetCOBOL for Windows Version 6 runs on Windows 98/Me/2000/NT/XP. NetCOBOL for Windows comes in three editions: Standard, Professional and Enterprise.

Note: The Enterprise Edition includes all features and tools that are available in the Professional and Standard editions and the Professional Edition includes all features and tools that are available in the Standard Edition.

Which Edition?

NetCOBOL for Windows Enterprise Edition
Buy the Enterprise edition if you:

  • Want professional COBOL-driven reports, including graphics, possibly replacing expensive pre-printed forms. (PowerFORM)
  • Are likely to do many data file manipulations, such as creating test files, editing data or converting from one file format to another. (Data Converter, Data Editor)
  • Have a group of developers who share code and need a source control or configuration management system. (PowerGEM Plus)
  • Need the full features of PowerBSORT - such as faster sorting, stand-alone sorting, or sorting from other languages. (PowerBSORT)
  • Are offloading applications from mainframes. (Data Converter)

NetCOBOL for Windows Professional Edition
Buy the Professional Ediiton if you:

  • Want to create professional Windows GUIs using COBOL as the scripting language. (PowerCOBOL)

NetCOBOL for Windows Standard Edition
Buy the Standard edition if you:

  • Only develop non-GUI COBOL applications or only use COBOL as a sub-program to GUI programs such as Visual Basic. (COBOL compiler and run-time)

  • COBOL compiler generates standard .NET MSIL (Microsoft Intermediate Language) code with the option to generate verifiable (Web safe) code.
  • Enhances COBOL syntax to allow creation of and integration with .NET Framework objects.
  • COBOL programs can be integrated seamlessly with other languages: inheriting from classes created in other languages, invoking and being invoked by methods written in other languages.
  • Full access to .NET Framework classes, including XML Web service classes
  • Mixed language applications can be debugged with the one, Visual Studio, debugger
  • Interoperation with COM and existing native code compilers
  • Includes, and integrates with, Microsoft's Visual Studio 2005
  • Includes COBOL support for Windows Forms Designer, Web Forms Designer, and IntelliSense
  • ANSI Code Page (ACP) and Unicode runtime data modes aid migrating and mixing ACP applications in the .NET Unicode environment.

Fujitsu products include first year Support which includes Technical support, patches, fixes, and new releases.

Please Note: These are the system requirements for Microsoft Visual Studio 2005. In addtion to these requirements and extra 60MB of disk space is required for the NetCOBOL for .NET product.

The Standard Edition of Visual Studio 2005 is included within the NetCOBOL for .NET product. Only if you want features not in the Standard Edition of Visual Studio 2005, would you need to make an additional Visual Studio purchase.

Notes
(1). Performance has not been tuned for minimum system configuration. Increasing your RAM above the recommended system configuration will increase your performance, specifically when running multiple applications, working with large projects, or doing enterprise-level development.
(2). When you start the Visual Studio 2005 installer, the default installation location is your system drive, which is the drive that boots your system. However, you can install the application on any drive. Regardless of the application's location, the installation process installs some files on your system drive. Consequently, ensure that the above amount of space is available on your system drive regardless of the application's location, and ensure that additional space, as listed above, is available on the drive on which you install the application.
