Product Information

Microsoft Exchange 2010 improves the productivity and collaboration of your business with a powerful messaging platform enabling communication anywhere, anytime. Exchange 2010 has a comprehensive range of new features including built-in disaster recovery and high availability functionality, improved Outlook Web Access for access to communications anywhere, updated voice mail support and new compliancy and information protection features to ensure your confidential communications are secure. Note that Exchange only runs on a 64 bit server hardware.

New Features

Diaster recovery and high availability

  • In-built support for full-scale Exchange redundancy - Replicate mail-boxes with just two or more servers and provide automatic recovery from failures at the disk, server or data center level. The failover time has been reduced to around 30 seconds.
  • Provide site level protection by replicating data across multiple data centers
  • Easily add high availability support to your Exchange server - even after installing Exchange
  • Perform point-in-time database restores without the need for tape drives be enabling log file replay to be lagged
  • Migrate mailboxes between servers, during business hours, without having to take the servers offline, reducing user disruption
  • Ensure messages still get delivered after hardware failure. Transport resiliency checks to see if any messages fail to send and resubmits them for sending via a different internal route.

New Self-service Capabilities

  • Reduce administrative tasks with a new Web-based control panel for Exchange users that allows them to perform common tasks e.g. update their contact information and track delivery receipt information
  • Enable Roles-based Access Control and give users the rights to perform specialist tasks without having to give them administrative rights. For example, allow certain users to conduct multi-mailbox searches so that they may enforce company compliance policies
  • Appoint moderators to distribution/mailing lists. They can review any emails sent to the distribution address and deny or approve them before they get sent

Improved Outlook Web Access (OWA)

  • Access all email, voice mail, instant messages, and text messages wherever you are using OWA
  • Scroll through all the messages in your mailbox in one single view - no more pages to navigate through
  • Group messages to form a single 'conversation'. Conversations are always preserved even if the individual messages span multiple folders.
  • Improved OWA support across browsers, including Firefox 3+ and Safari 3+
  • Get presence information on individuals in OWA to determine their status and set your own presence status
  • New powerful search within OWA can filter items using search strings such as 'from:', 'to:', and 'attachments:' and save your most common searches
  • Display shared calendars and contacts of other Exchange users within OWA

Improved Voice Mail and Unified Messaging Support

  • Voice mail preview enables users to receive a text version of a voice mail using speech-to-text technology. The text based content can be read in a way similar to that of an email and any recognised actionable information, such as an email address or a contact's name can be emailed or added to the address book
  • Users can get notified of new and unread voice mail in Exchange by visual indications on supported desk phones
  • Auto attendant functionality allows people calling an organisation to find the person they are trying to reach when they don't know the exact phone number, they can search for contacts and have their call forwarded to the respective individual
  • New call answering rules, which can present custom greeting and call transfer options depending on the time of day, caller-ID, Exchange Presence status, help to give greater control over how they can be reached over the phone

Improved Compliancy and Information Protection

  • Protect voice mail and email from unauthorised distribution by specifying users who may access messages and the operations they may perform on them. This functionality integrates with Active Directory Rights Management Services available within Windows Server
  • Enable partners and customers to read and reply to IRM-protected mail – even if they do not have Active Directory Rights Management Services (ADRMS) on premise
  • Automatically apply a signature to the bottom of an e-mail based on sender’s Active Directory (AD) attributes
  • Use the new MailTips to alert users when the email they are about to send may result in policy violations or may be sent to unintended recipients
  • Allow managers/moderators to review email before they get sent
  • Transfer local PST files from the client back to the Exchange server for improved control, backup and policy enforcement
  • Classify individual emails or folders using new definable Retention Policies

Features

  • Anti-spam and Antivirus - Built-in defenses against spam and phishing e-mail as well as additional integrated filtering and multi-engine scanning capabilities provide advanced protection
  • Compliance - Controls for messages in transport or requiring retention, and flexible journaling help meet organisational, legal and regulatory compliance requirements
  • Business Continuity - New data replication capabilities and the ability to move mailboxes between servers without downtime to keep your business running
  • Unified Messaging - Exchange Unified Messaging goes beyond e-mail to deliver more types of communications to the inbox, including faxes and voice mail, as well as offering new capabilities such as voice access from any standard phone
  • Web-Based Messaging - Updated Outlook-like experience now works with other browsers, comes with an improved search, enhanced calendaring and more
  • Mobile Messaging - Exchange ActiveSync technology delivers an improved e-mail and calendaring experience on mobile devices, while offering enhanced device and security policy control
  • Collaboration and Productivity - Enhanced calendaring, out-of-office, resource booking, and meeting scheduling capabilities simplify collaboration and increase productivity
  • Administration - New rights management allow you to delegate specific rights to individuals without giving them administrative access
  • Deployment - Modular setup and server provisioning based on server roles, as well as capabilities to automatically discover Outlook and mobile clients simplify deployment
  • Extensibility - Web services-based application programming interface (API) and .NET integration via Exchange Management Shell tasks enable rapid development for custom and third-party applications.
