Visualise, streamline and automate the process of rolling new and updated IT services into production with VMware Stage Manager. The first product of its kind, VMware Stage Manager solves the problem of server sprawl, configuration drift and repetitive system test in pre-production by running application environments as virtual machine configurations that can be easily transitioned through the stages of the release process. VMware Stage Manager reduces the risks associated with changes to production systems by enabling IT and application administrators to easily clone system configurations and maintain consistent virtual machine images throughout the release process, as needed, so you can respond to changing business conditions faster.

IT Service Delivery

With VMware Stage Manager, you can automate the delivery of IT services using point-and-click promotion of software configurations between the stages of the release process. You don’t need to reconfigure, reinstall your software, because VMware Stage Manager makes it easy to deploy service configurations to resource pools associated with stages of the release process during pre-production and production. It’s all automatic.

Patch Testing

VMware Stage Manager reduces the risk associated with changing production systems by allowing you to make an exact copy of a production service and deploy that production clone in a resource pool associated with an earlier stage in the release process. There, you can test patches before pushing the new patched system back into production, or apply the patch directly in production after it has been verified. This feature reduces the risk of unplanned downtime when changing production environments.

Historical Archiving

VMware Stage Manager simplifies historical archiving and provides you with the ability to quickly restore entire service configurations from the archive in case of an audit. Simply select “Archive Now" to save a replica of a system in a highly efficient storage format. VMware Stage Manager also keeps an audit trail of all system changes and service operations that can be used to ensure regulatory or IT process compliance.

Increase Visibility

The VMware Stage Manager user interface is organised around services and the stages associated with each service. It displays and acts on services as a unit, operating on the cnfiguration of virtual machines that combine to deliver the IT service.

  • Use a simple user interface as a global view of all services under management
  • Organise multi-machine service configurations by the IT service they support
  • Define the stages of the release process and customise them for specific services
  • Associate resource pools from VMware VirtualCenter with services and lifecycle stages

Effortlessly Transition Service Configurations Between Stages

VMware Stage Manager ensures the accuracy of pre-production resources by letting you create snapshots of production systems and move them back and forth, as needed. In this way, every service in every stage uses an exact copy of the most current system.

  • Create multi-tier service configurations in seconds using machines templates, with no limit on machine count
  • Deploy cloned configurations side-by-side using the “fenced network" feature
  • Promote and demote service configurations across the lifecycle in seconds
  • Optimise for performance or disk space consumption with full and linked clone technology
  • Interact with all service configuration consoles on a single browser page
  • Set lease times to automatically un-deploy expired configurations
  • Leverage VMware Distributed Resource Scheduler (DRS) for optimum virtual machine placement across resource clusters

Control Access on a Per-Service Basis

VMware Stage Manager lets you authorise users to see only the services or stages of particular services that they need to access.

  • Grant user permissions on a per-service, per-stage basis
  • Gain out-of-the-box support for LDAP
  • Assign an administrator role to multiple users
  • Allow users to self-manage preferences

Comply with IT Processes and Regulations

VMware Stage Manager keeps an audit trail of system and configuration changes to ensure regulatory and IT process compliance.

  • Archive and restore complete service configurations with a single mouse-click
  • Leverage hierarchical storage management for archived service configurations.
  • Store event and configuration change logs for audit purposes

Optimise Resource Utilisation

You can configure VMware Stage Manager to use linked-clones to maximise storage efficiency in the non-production environment, or provide full disks to configurations in production to achieve higher performance.

  • Monitor resource consumption on a per-service or per-stage basis
  • Optimise datastore utilisation with graphical displays of disk space consumption and configuration dependency trees
  • Reduce time spent rolling out new or upgrading existing services.
  • Accelerate the completion of change requests to production systems.
  • More easily enforce change and release management procedures.
  • Increase the resource utilization efficiency of services hosted on VMware Infrastructure.
  • Maintain accurate replicas of production systems.
  • Ensure consistency between stages of the release process.
  • Reduce infrastructure costs through more efficient use of hardware resources.
  • Keep an auditable history of service configuration changes.
