Exchange Server 2007 provides built-in protection technologies to help keep the e-mail system up and running and insulated from outside threats while allowing employees to work virtually anywhere, using clients such as Microsoft Office Outlook, Microsoft Outlook Web Access, and mobile devices. Exchange Server 2007 makes it easier for IT administrators to deliver these new capabilities to their organisations in a manageable and cost-effective manner. Note that Exchange Server 2007 only runs on a 64 bit server hardware.

Exchange Server is licensed in the Server / Client Access License (CAL) model. Under this model, an Exchange Server license is required for each operating system environment running Exchange Server. A CAL is required for each user or device accessing Exchange Server.

With the release of Exchange 2007, Exchange Server 2007 is offered in two client access license (CAL) editions: Standard CAL and Enterprise CAL. These titles are a little confusing giving the impression that the Standard CALs are or use with the Standard Edition Server, and the Enterprise CALs are for use with the Enterprise Ediion Server. This is NOT the case.

The Standard CALs are a common foundational CAL for both the Standard Server and Enterprise Server products.

The Exchange Server Standard CAL provides access to e-mail, shared calendaring and Outlook Web Access (OWA). In addition you will get advancements that reduce the cost and complexity of the messaging system by giving IT Administrators the messaging protection their company demands, the anywhere access their end users want and the reliability they need.

The Enterprise CALs are additional, the client must already have or get the Standard CAL as a foundation.

The Exchange Server Enterprise CAL is an additive CAL and requires that a Standard CAL is also purchased for each user or device. The Exchange Server Enterprise CAL provides access to Unified Messaging and advanced compliance, as well as Forefront Security for Exchange Server and Exchange Hosted Filtering for onsite and hosted antivirus and anti-spam protection.

Standard and Enterprise CALs can be used for both Standard and Enterprise Editions of the Exchange 2007 Server.

If you are purchasing Exchange CALs with downgrade use in mind (i.e. using them with Exchange Server 2003, then just purchase the Exchange Server Standard CALs. The Enterprise CALs are of no relevance with Exchange 2003.

  • Server roles: a new modular system that configures Exchange as one (or more) of five basic server roles. Choosing a role means enabling only those features necessary to that role, thereby decreasing the surface area for attacks through other features
  • WebReady Document Viewing: a new option in OWA allows Office documents (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and PDF) to be accessed as e-mail attachments or through public folders to be displayed as HTML, even if Office isn't installed on the client PC
  • Exchange Management Shell: the PowerShell scripting language, specifically optimised for Exchange, offers potent new tools for the day-to-day e-mail administrator
  • Exchange ActiveSync: improved direct push e-mail ensures ActiveSync clients receive messages on server connect. Other mobile-friendly features include inline message fetch - the ability to download long attachments without reloading the entire message - and information rights management, which allows users with proper authority to view protected messages without being connected to a server
  • Exchange Forefront and Exchange Hosted Services: forefront is a rebranding of the Antigen anti-virus/anti-spam products acquired from Sybari, which together provide a quality local security gateway. The Exchange Hosted Services version, available by subscription, delivers additional security, archiving, and continuity.
  • Outlook Web Access: the latest OWA client is a near-perfect clone of the Outlook 2003 desktop interface. Features and views are nearly the same, and performance is excellent. Incredibly, thin-client deployment becomes a real option.
  • Outlook auto-discover: Exchange 2007 combined with Outlook 2007 means administrators will no longer need to walk to client desktops to configure Outlook access to a specific account location. Users simply enter their user names and passwords, and Outlook automatically finds local Exchange servers, locates the proper e-mail account, and sets up access.
  • Smart scheduling: the addition of Scheduling Assistant and Calendar Attendant mean that Exchange tracks not only the schedules of all meeting invitees but also the availability of meeting rooms and can manage all of this on the server, so meetings can be fully scheduled without everyone's Outlook client being connected.
  • Improved search: a re-written search algorithm noticeably boosts the speed at which Outlook can find specific messages in large message stores. Administrators can access the same fast indexing in multiple-mailbox searches.
  • Bundled encryption: Exchange can now automatically encrypt all e-mail messages sent within the local organisation. It also automatically supports TSL (Transcript Security Layer) encryption, including built-in certificates, as long as both hosts support TLS.
  • Anti-spam and Antivirus - Built-in defenses against spam and phishing e-mail as well as additional integrated filtering and multi-engine scanning capabilities provide advanced protection
  • Compliance - Controls for messages in transport or requiring retention, and flexible journaling help meet organisational, legal and regulatory compliance requirements
  • Business Continuity - New data replication capabilities (local and clustered) keep the system highly available while limiting the need and frequency for tape backup
  • Confidential Messaging - New encryption features for both internal and Internet-based messages help protect the confidentiality of messages in transit
  • Unified Messaging - New Exchange Unified Messaging goes beyond e-mail to deliver more types of communications to the inbox, including faxes and voice mail, as well as offering new capabilities such as voice access from any standard phone
  • Web-Based Messaging - A rich Outlook-like experience from any Internet connected computer with a supported browser provides encrypted access to the inbox, powerful search, and the ability to view different types of attachments
  • Mobile Messaging - Exchange ActiveSync technology delivers an improved e-mail and calendaring experience on mobile devices, while offering enhanced device and security policy control
  • Collaboration and Productivity - Enhanced calendaring, out-of-office, resource booking, and meeting scheduling capabilities simplify collaboration and increase productivity
  • Performance and Scalability - Improved storage efficiency can be achieved through the extended memory and larger cache of x64-based architecture even as mailbox sizes increase; more efficient routing ensures the best use of bandwidth
  • Administration - New graphical and command-line interfaces offer improved manageability and increased automation while integrated tools simplify maintenance
  • Deployment - Modular setup and server provisioning based on server roles, as well as capabilities to automatically discover Outlook and mobile clients simplify deployment
  • Extensibility - New Web services-based application programming interface (API) and .NET integration via Exchange Management Shell tasks enable rapid development for custom and third-party applications.
