Inferno was originally developed at Bell Labs and shares many features with Plan 9, but whereas Plan 9 is a general purpose operating system, Inferno was designed with small networked devices. Inferno is designed around the basic principle that all resources appear as files in a hierarchical file system (namespace) which is unique to each process. These resources are accessed via a secure network-level protocol called Styx which hides the exact location of services from the user. All Inferno servers provide their services as an exported hierarchy of files.
Novel features of Inferno include:
Limbo, an efficient programming language with advanced interprocess synchronisation and communication facilities
Tk graphics package
Object code (Dis) is independent of architecture type
Unicode character set support throughout the system
Acme integrating development environment
C cross-compilers for 68000, 68020, ARM, Power PC, x86 and Sparc.
Inferno runs in hosted mode under many different operating systems, providing an environment suitable for rapid development of distributed systems.
Native Inferno, on the other hand, is a complete operating system in its own right, running on embedded systems with as little as 1Mb of memory.
