Writing and testing database logic is often the most time consuming and error-prone phase of building a database application. Rapid SQL Pro can raise the productivity of both expert and novice database programmers while helping to improve code quality. It contains extensive code templates that eliminate the need to memorize and type SQL syntax. In addition, its graphical browsing capabilities allow you to understand the structure and dependencies of database objects with a click of a mouse. Armed with Rapid SQL Pro, your database programmers can produce better database code faster, accelerating the delivery of critical database applications.

Schema Development
Rapid SQL Pro provides unparalleled database object development capabilities. Its database platform- and version-specific graphical object editors and wizards enable you to create, drop or alter a wide variety of database objects, including tables, constraints, indexes, views, procedures, functions, triggers, and packages.

Rapid SQL Pro's standardized, multi-tabbed, graphical object editors for each database object type allow you to move effortlessly from managing a SQL Server or Sybase® schema to managing an Oracle® schema - and vice-versa. The product contains full knowledge of the underlying DBMS system catalog, syntax, and alteration rules.

SQL Scripting and Development
Rapid SQL Pro offers powerful visual tools for creating and analyzing complex SQL statements and server-side code objects such as stored procedures, triggers, etc. Using the Query Builder, you can construct even the most complicated SQL statements with point-and-click ease. As you select the objects and methods to use for SQL statements, Rapid SQL Pro automatically generates the code. The built-in syntax-checking facility ensures that all SQL statements are built to run correctly the first time. Rapid SQL Pro's feature-rich ISQL facility allows you to create, save, and execute all SQL code against your databases with ease. Built-in hotkeys, column lookup, code completion and code template features help you code SQL as quickly as possible.

To analyze and debug your code, Rapid SQL Pro provides built-in explain and performance execution analysis as well as cross-platform code debuggers (purchased and licensed separately) that you can use to troubleshoot server-side code objects. For unattended SQL capture and execution analysis, you can use the optional SQL Profiler component (purchased and licensed separately).

Database Project Management
Working with off-line SQL code as opposed to live database objects helps safeguard your environment. Rapid SQL Pro organizes and categorizes database objects into an off-line SQL source code repository that you can manage via a graphical tree interface. You can easily work with original SQL source code as opposed to live database objects. A powerful reverse-engineering facility can extract a predefined subset of existing objects from a live database into a Rapid SQL Pro project, producing an individual file for each database object.

Built-In Version Control
Rapid SQL Pro provides seamless integration with most commercial version-control packages, such as Microsoft SourceSafe, PVCS, and Clear Case. You can place projects under a central version control system with just a few mouse clicks, enabling multiple developers to work on the same project. All version control operations, such as get, checkout, check-in, history, and diff are supported.

In addition to supporting version-control packages while working with Rapid SQL Pro projects, users can work with individual source control files already existing in version-control repositories.

Visual SQL Statement Creation and Data Editing
Rapid SQL Pro offers powerful visual tools for creating SQL statements and editing data. Using the Query Builder, you can construct even the most complicated SQL statements with point-and-click ease. As you select the objects and methods for SQL statements, Rapid SQL Pro automatically generates the code. The built-in syntax checking facility ensures that all SQL statements are built and run correctly the first time.

The Data Grid allows you do ad-hoc data editing within Rapid SQL Pro. You can add, change, or remove data on a row-by-row basis, or you can save all modifications and send them as one unit of work to the database. All referential integrity constraints are enforced in every editing session.

Web Development Facilities
Web programmers developing with Java and HTML will find that Rapid SQL Pro offers many of the tools necessary to create database-aware Web applications. Using Rapid SQL Pro, you can simultaneously browse data in an Oracle database, debug a PL/SQL procedure in the Oracle database, compile a Java program, and edit a Web page. Rapid SQL Pro's Web-oriented productivity features include:
HTML and Java editor windows with syntax highlighting
Built-in Java-enabled browser for testing HTML and Java Applets
Split-screen error reporting and auto-location for Java
Integration with any Java compiler, including the Sun Microsystems JDK

Code Analyst
The Code Analyst lets you perform detailed response time analysis on the execution of stored procedures and functions. You can benchmark the execution of one or more stored procedures or functions to determine exactly what code objects and lines of code are taking the longest to run. Code Analyst also allows you to historically store response time metrics and perform intelligent compares against current execution times so you can determine deviations from previous acceptable response times.

Optional Debugging and Profiling Functionality
Embarcadero offers two optional modules.

  • The Embarcadero SQL Debugger Enables you to debug programmable objects such as stored procedures, functions, packages and triggers.
  • The Embarcadero SQL Profiler Enables you to capture metrics of various PL/SQL programmable objects on Oracle 8i and higher, such as stored procedures and functions as they are executed in the database. This information helps identify and isolate efficiency and performance problems, and is stored in a database for future reference.
