SmartScan Xpress Barcode has been renamed Barcode Xpress to coincide with the release of Version 5. They have added recognition of QR Code and 3 new postal codes, improved the 1D and 2D recognition accuracy rates, and provided streaming support to integrate with Pegasus Imaging’s FormSuite components. The product has evolved with the new launch, and the name change is consistent with our product naming strategy.
QR Code Recognition
Pegasus Imaging introduces recognition support for the 2-dimensional (2D) QR Code, one of very few barcode types that support encoding of Asian Kanji and Kana characters. QR code offers up to 30% error recovery, making this barcode especially suitable for business-critical applications.
Intelligent Mail (formerly OneCode) - 4-State U.S. Postal Service Barcode Recognition
The United States Postal Service (USPS) has adopted a new 4-state barcode called Intelligent Mail (formerly OneCode) that Barcode Xpress will now recognise. It includes more address information than the current postal codes. More information about the new postal barcode can be found at the USPS Web site.
Royal Mail 4-State Customer Code (RM4SCC) – 4-State U.K. Postal Service Barcode Recognition
Barcode Xpress will now recognise the Royal Mail 4-State Customer Code (RM4SCC), a new 4-state barcode being used in the U.K.
Australia Post - 4-State Barcode Recognition
Recognition of the Australian variant of the 4-State Postal Code is supported by Barcode Xpress.
Improved Barcode Recognition
Pegasus Imaging’s scientists have improved the recognition accuracy, to recognise more 1D and 2D barcodes than SmartScan Xpress v4 recognised. The barcode recognition process has been improved by extending the mathematical algorithms used for barcode detection, and extending the process used to refine and verify candidate barcodes. User configurable settings may be selected to direct some recognition behavior. When possible, check digits are used to verify recognition results. Candidate barcode regions of interest are accessible to developers who may chose to apply image cleanup processing and then apply recognition again. Specific check sum values and number of digits are also returned for barcodes supporting check sums. Confidence values are also reported for detected barcodes.
45-Degree Scanning Angle Feature
Barcode Xpress now offers a user-configurable option to scan at a 45-degree angle in addition to earlier supported horizontal and vertical scans. This feature helps detect barcodes at high skew angles.
Streaming Support to Integrate with FormSuite Components
Barcode Xpress now provides streaming support to integrate with FormSuite, a collection of components that performs a variety of forms processing functions, including form identification and optical character recognition (OCR). The new application programmer interface (API) allows Barcode Xpress to be more easily integrated into applications built using components in FormSuite.
Edition Change
The Basic edition is no longer available. Chariot Support customers who previously licensed the Basic edition will be automatically upgraded to Standard, and Chariot Support customers who previously licensed the Standard edition will be automatically upgraded to Professional.
Barcode Xpress v5 Editions
Standard is speed-limited to 4 barcodes per second and supports reading and writing only 1D barcodes.
Professional continues to offer unlimited recognition speed, and supports both 1D and 2D barcode reading and 1D writing.
Professional + 2D Write continues to offer the same features as Professional plus 2D writing.

It is engineered for high-end, high-volume imaging applications where speed is critical for the success of the application. Barcode Xpress Professional supports 1D recognition and writing, and 2D recognition. It supports both Standard and Professional recognition speeds, allowing integrators to deploy either speed and price option.
