Using XML standards such as the Darwin Information Typing Architecture (DITA), XMetaL enables authors and contributors to collaborate effectively—and to repurpose higher-value information products into the myriad of languages and formats your customers demand. Used standalone or integrated with virtually any content management system, XMetaL helps even non-technical writers to create and collaborate on reusable content without needing to be proficient in XML. XMetaL Author Enterprise 5.1 now subsumes XMetaL Author and XMetaL Author DITA Edition. All of the capabilities in these two products have been rolled into XMetaL Author Enterprise 5.1.

DITA Authoring
  • Templates, dialogs, menus, toolbars, styling, and special editing behaviors for most DITA 1.1 elements, the latest version of the Darwin Information Typing Architecture
  • Easier insertion and editing of index "sort as" elements into documents and handling of complex indexing requirements spanning multiple pages
  • Simplified creation of valid bookmaps that define print deliverables, such as front and back matter, parts, chapters, glossaries and various types of lists and figures
  • Improved Map Editor for quicker navigation to referenced topics
  • Improved DITA dialogs with a consistent look and feel and improved keyboard support
  • Context-sensitive help for DITA elements
  • Greater flexibility in defining conditional processing, such as the ability to add specialised attributes to conditional text dialogs
  • Support for MathML, which uses the new element in DITA 1.1
  • Authoring support for DITA specialisations in minutes-now including specialisations based on new DITA 1.1 types such as bookmaps and glossaries

Enhanced Publishing

  • Enhanced default bookmap rendering for high-quality output, with two new deliverable types for greatly improved PDF processing
  • PDF output with parameter values such as header/footer content and layout, page margins, fonts, and table styles that can be set without the need to program in XSL-FO
  • Glossary entry merging from multiple sources and localisation sorting according to rules in PDF output
  • Support for the latest version of the DITA Open Toolkit (1.4) with publishing support for DITA 1.1 and full backwards compatibility with DITA OT 1.3
  • Full technical support and improved documentation for configuring the DITA Open Toolkit and performing common configurations for PDF, HTML, and CHM output
  • Improved image support with a built-in deliverable type for publishing EPS Graphics in vector format in PDF output (requires installation of Adobe Distiller)
  • Maps publishable to a single HTML file with an embedded table of contents and custom styling, headers and footers

Improved Reuse

  • A new transclusion model for easier editing or removal of conref attributes, and for handling transclusions such as DITA conref in which referenced content is viewed without being stored in the referencing document
  • Improved reference preview with either WYSIWYG or tags-on preview of targets in insert content reference dialogues
  • No need for authors to know specific markup with dialogs for attaching content references to any element-or detaching (removing) a content reference from any element
  • Display of referenced content in context with a richer and more flexible content view, including content references shown as an inline, read-only view of the referenced content or hidden as a editable placeholder element containing the conref attribute and any local content
  • A progress dialog provides feedback to users while references are being refreshed
  • Improved reference validation automatically checks references and ensures validity in the proper context
  • Automatic generalisation of content reference elements

Infrastructure Enhancements

  • Faster refreshes of referenced content for documents that contain large numbers of conrefs and/or xrefs
  • Better control of image scale attributes, and viewing of images in the editor at an absolute size (specifying width, height, and units) or as a percentage of original size
  • Certified support for deploying XMetaL Author Enterprise on Citrix servers, including access by limited users
Promote Content Reuse for Greater Quality and Consistency
  • Locate, reference, and reuse content from file systems or content repositories for consistency across the enterprise
  • Publish XML content directly from the author's desktop to a variety of customer-facing output formats including PDF, HTML, online help systems and more
  • Leverage XMetaL's extensible publishing framework - a scalable, low-cost alternative to proprietary publishing systems
  • Integrate authoring with virtually any or multiple repositories, content management systems (CMS) or source control systems in your organisation with XMetaL Connector

Create Structured Content as Easily as Working in a Word Processor

  • Ensure the validity of XML, hiding the complexity of the underlying markup from non-technical users and giving power users access to XML structure and code, components, attributes and elements
  • Author in virtually any language including Cyrillic, Asian and Middle Eastern languages (with bi-directional support), including spell-checking support in over 30 languages
  • Use with XMetaL Reviewer to support your whole author, review, and approval cycles through a simple web-based interface

Leverage Best Practices in Topic-based Authoring

  • First authoring software with full DITA support, including visualisation and advanced editing for better control of content presentation
  • Help authors write with reuse in mind with a familiar, topic-oriented user interface designed specifically for authoring of DITA content
  • Minimise development and maintenance costs by automatically generating authoring configurations for DITA specialisations
